Counting out loud is very important, It addresses several areas.
1 It let's you know immediately if you played a wrong beat.
2 It let's you feel where the beat is you are playing.
3 Most importantly, the vibrations your voice creates let you feel the time inside your body. It vibrates the chest cavity, moving the concept of time from your head and hands into your heart.
Another thing I use is the McRhythms method.
Shake--1/4 note
French Fry-1/8th notes
Apple Pie-1e&
Hamburger-1 &a
Watermelon-1e&a
Chicken-1e
ketchup, more-1e a
Any other rhythms will be figured out, but these work wonders with kids who don't get 1e&a etc... I also eventually make them count 1e&a etc.. so they understand better.
